DON'T ask anyone to make a donation because you "need" the money
DON'T ask for a fixed price when a donation will do
DON'T expect automatic pay from pledges - you may have to remind them
DON'T expect too much from members - you should have fun and raise money

Brainstorming

BRAINSTORMING excites and motivates everyone involved in your student organization. Exchange as many ideas as possible, the more you have to choose from, the better your final choice. You can use brainstorming for almost anything: themes, program ideas, problem-solving, publicity, slogans, group goals, etc.

The rules for brainstorming are simple.

First . . . set the stage:

• Set a time limit of 5-10 minutes, depending upon the complexity of the issue and the size of the group.
• The best group size is 3-15 people. If you have more, break into two or more groups and brainstorm simultaneously.
• The question or issue must be one to which all participants can speak. A facilitator is often helpful to get things started. It is important to focus on only one issue.
• Record all responses on a blackboard or big sheets of newsprint so everyone can see them; don't record the name of the person suggesting. Record only key words and phrases, not word for word.

Second . . . set the ground rules:

• Do not discuss ideas - you’ll do that later.
• Do not criticize, praise, evaluate, or judge.
• Be spontaneous - no hand raising, just call out.
• Repetitions are OK.
• Quantity counts. Set a specific number of ideas to be obtained.
• Build on each other's ideas.
• Enjoy the silences - often the best ideas come out of them.
• It's okay to be outrageous, even silly.

Third . . . make good use of members' creativity:

• If several groups brainstorm the same idea, put the lists on the wall and let everyone read each other's work.
• Group ideas into related categories for review.
• Decide which ideas are most promising and which can be eliminated. This may be done with a system of pluses and minuses.
• Rank in order from the most promising to the least promising.
• Select ideas with the greatest potential and with the highest ranking priority for implementation or refinement by committee.
• Be sure to utilize the ideas generated. It is extremely demoralizing for a group to invest its time, energy and creativity only to have its ideas disappear. On the other hand, seeing an original idea come to fruition is extremely rewarding.

Fundraising

DEVELOPING a successful fund raising strategy allows your organization the opportunity to cover operating expenses, complete projects and programs, and create a small cushion for the future. Many organizations find that the success of their fund raising may be attributed to the following principles:

THINK POSITIVELY: As you begin your planning for the year, think big -- dream a little! Ask yourself, "If money were not an issue, what would the group do?" Feel free to use your imagination. Generally it is easier to scale down your organization's plans than to scale up mid-year. After you have identified ideal activities for the year, you should begin to assess the feasibility of your goals in light of your resources. Although you have to look at these realistically, be positive -- do not permit a lack of available funds to stifle your plans.

ESTABLISH FINANCIAL GOALS: If you do not know where you are going, you will never know if you have arrived! When planning your organization's budget, your budget of proposed expenses must be developed and reviewed against existing resources. The specific dollar figure beyond existing resources that will be required to operate become your organization's fund raising target. Now is the time to be creative, yet realistic!

DEVELOP CREATIVE FUND RAISING ALTERNATIVES: Once you have established a financial target, identify all potential sources of funds and develop creative ways to TAP your resources. Successful organizations utilize MULTIPLE approaches to fund raising.

ESTABLISH YOUR FUND RAISING PLAN: Fund raising is very similar to any other organization project; it can't be successful if left to chance without proper planning. Answer the basic questions:

• WHO
• WHAT
• WHERE
• WHEN
• WHY

As you CREATIVELY EXPLORE various approaches to fund raising, it is important to balance the costs to your organization with the risks involved. Once a financial plan is developed, write it down.

EVALUATE FUND RAISING ACTIVITIES: In order to determine your level of success, maximize learning opportunities and advise future leaders of your chapter, it is imperative that you evaluate your fund raising activities. This evaluation should include a qualitative analysis and conclude with recommendations for future fund raising activities.

Chinese auctions can add spice to your events
Canadian FundRaiser

If you are looking to put a new spin on an old event like a lottery or auction, why not try combining them into a Chinese Auction? No, it's not an auction targetted at a specific community, but rather an event which includes elements of a raffle and an auction, where participants buy chances to win auction prizes.

Auction items are assigned a value and that value is then divided into a set number of "chances" which are sold to participants. A $500 bed-and-breakfast weekend might be divided into 10 chances of $50 each, while each chance for a $5,000 cruise might cost $500. Participants can increase their odds of winning by buying several chances on a item. as chances are purchased, the buyer receives a number with a corresponding place on the prize wheel. When all the chances are sold, the prize wheel is spun to reveal the winner of the item.

A recent Chinese Auction in Michigan raised $75,000 for a local seniors centre. According to event organizer Heather Asiala, the event is a refreshing change from ordinary auctions or raffles. Placing a value on the prizes and then selling chances on them also helps to set a definite financial goal because each prize has an assigned value and is not simply bid on that evening.

Although some prizes may sell for less than they might have been auctioned for in a live auction, or traditional silent auction, Asiala notes that Chinese auctions often allow a broader base of participation. She explains, "Some people who can't afford $500 for a weekend away may pay $200 for four chances. Others will just buy a chance or two on everything. With this set-up, there's something for everyone."

Operated in conjunction with a dinner or reception, Chinese auctions offer a lively and interesting new twist to two established methods of fundraising and are sure to add spice to your present events.
Chinese auctions
A Small Chinese Auction for your lions club meetings,
You will need two wrapped gifts. No one but you knows what is inside the packages. You start the bidding at $2.00. Whoever opens at $2.00 pays 50 cents to do so, and each bid thereafter, requires a payment of 50 cents. Everyone bids as in a traditional auction, until the dollar amount equivalent to the price of the item is reached. You may go $5.00 over the price and say "The lion holding $22.00 wins"!

For example, if it was a clock worth $22.00, you would start the bidding at $2.00. If I want to up the bid to $3.00, I would have to pay you 50 cents. The next person wants to up the bid to $4.25; he or she would have to pay you 50 cents to do so.   When the dollar amount equivalent to the price of the item is reached, in this case $22.00, that person just bought the clock. All monies raised through bidding, that is, each 50 cents paid, goes toward whatever fund you have designated.

If after opening the package, the buyer decides they don’t need it, they are free to re wrap it and auction it off at another meeting or event. If they keep the clock, they must provide a substitute item for the next auction.

Just remember 4 bids will only cost you $2.00 regardless how much you have bid. Also, if you have two or more items, instead of just one, it can be more exciting. It is also more fun when there are visitors present. The more the merrier!

Have fun!!!

Remember if a Guest should win, the president must buy a new gift to start the auction again. other then that it was the last person (S) who one it is their turn to run the next meeting auction
fundraising auction
If your organization is thinking about holding a fundraising auction you basically have three options: the live auction, the online auction, or the silent auction

Grants from governments & foundations
With so many potential sources of assistance, half the battle is figuring out who supports what. After identifying a possibility, find out about application procedures. Getting a grant usually requires writing up a good proposal. Look for matching grants. In many cases governments will contribute a dollar for every dollar raised by citizens.

Lots of Lions Hall were built this way!
A Poker Tournament "Or" A Poker Run
Ladies and Gentlemen, Start your Engines”

What is the Poker Run??

A Poker Run is not a race , it is a game of chance and a assembly of some of the hottest, fastest and exotic boats in North America!

The public gather with wide-eyed , love-struck thoughts like children over these super-fast water vessels.
A Poker Run is fun on the water with power to burn.
You have 4 or 5 bars involed each bar gives one card, then you end up at your club house or a bar and you play poker all night!

The Do's And Don'ts !!
If you get caught in the middle of the Poker Run Pack, out on the water:

Don't: bring your boat to a stop and turn off your engine!
Don't: Point your bow towards the pack so you can see the action better!
Don't: try to outrun the pack, you won't make it!
(You not only endanger yourself, but every one in the immediate area).
Don't: stand up and wave to them! (at 70 + mph they wont have time to wave back.)
Do: pay attention to the marshal boats! (They are there for your protection)
Do: when you here a load rumbling noise get as close to the shore!
(It is the safest place to stay out of the way)

Just a plain Poker Night
Sell tickets for $60.00, give 1/3 away in prize money
Add Dinner/Beer/ Wine and play play play!!!

A Poker Run is an organized motorcycle event where riders travel over a prescribed course and at designated stopping points, select a card. At the end of the run, the person with the best poker hand wins a prize. Poker Runs usually require a fee to enter with a part of the proceeds going to charity. Some runs are done from bar to bar but in the interest of safety, I don't recommend these. The best runs have a dinner at the end point and only serve soft drinks. Please do not drink and ride your motorcycle. The rules for Poker Runs vary depending on the event.

At The End of a boat or motorcycle event you could do a show and shine and show off the winning boat or bike!
