11 men and minimum of 8 women a drummer and a steer’s person surge forward in a long narrow boat across the great water at Christie Conservation Park.
They raise their paddles in the air and plunge them deep into the water in unison.
Their hearts are racing. Water is splashing everywhere.
And they are grunting, pushing themselves to stay in sync.
The rhythm in the boat is like one collective heartbeat.
The Aldershot Lions Club just completed their second annual Dragon Boat race to raise funds for a local charity.

Dragon Boat racing has evolved from a very old Chinese tradition. 20 paddlers sit in a long canoe-like craft, colorfully painted with a dragon’s head on the front and a tail on the back.
There are more than 1,000 dragon boat teams in Canada and more than 15 in the Hamilton/Burlington area.
Dragon boat racing is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Nearly 50 million people participate annually in competitions worldwide.
What is Dragon Boat Racing?
There are 20 paddlers in every boat. A drummer sits at the front of the boat and shouts commands while beating the drum each time the paddles hit the water. A steersperson stands at the back of the boat and controls the direction the boat takes.
Why Dragon Boat races?
It is the ultimate team sport. In no other sport do you have so many people doing the exact same motion at the same time. It is an amazing experience to have a group of people all working towards one goal.
It is also a great team building experience as well as a great motivational tool for a group of friends or work associates. You spend a day together working hard, having a great time together competing in different races and at the end of it all raising money for worthwhile charities.
You not only feel good from the workout but also get to feel even better that you have made a difference in your community.
This is a great way to get a group of people together, and to challenge other friends or companies to a friendly competition of Dragon Boat Racing.
This year’s event was held at Christie Conservation Park. The Aldershot Lions Club gave out two cheques, each in the amount of $2000,00. One went to the Carpenter Hospice and the other to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
Let’s see if we can do better this year!!! September 23, 2006. Don't miss the boat!!!!
