Burlington Aldershot Lions have been proud supporters of the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guide Program for many years.

In previous years, our Club donated half a dog to the program. Thanks to Acadia Candle Company of Dundas Ontario, in 2005, we were able to donate a whole dog to the seeing eye program.

We are extremely pleased to see that the dog went to help a young lady in our local community….

Great Work Aldershot Lions,
and Acadia Candle Company.
Saddled up and Ride

It’s a unique fundraising event for Canadians with physical disabilities and it’s going through your town!

On May 28, two horseback riders saddled up in Binscarth following a pancake breakfast and headed west to arrive in Calgary for the opening of the Calgary Stampede.

This is a three-province 1,000 km ride through Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, all to raise funds in support of the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides—a national organization that trains dog guides to assist Canadians with disabilities.

“We have been looking forward to Saddling Up for Dog Guides all year and it’s really heart-warming to see support come for all over Western Canada,” says Percy Miller, key organizer and charter member of the Binscarth Lions.

“Our goal is to raise money to help Canadians with physical disabilities achieve an independent lifestyle with the help of a dog guide.”

Brad Stewart of Russell, Man., and Dale Nickle of Onanole, Man., will ride about 35 km per day taking turns on five terrific horses. With a lead vehicle and transport trailer, they will be a self-contained unit.

Along the way, there will be many opportunities for the public to meet and contribute as well as enjoy some of the local events such as pancake breakfasts and barbecues.

Towns along the route include Binscarth, Spy Hill, Langenburg, Churchbridge,Bredenbury, Yorkton, Rosetown, Kindersley, Alsask,Hanna, Drumheller, Beiseker, Airdrie, and of course Calgary.

Lions Foundation of Canada has been training Dog Guides to serve the needs of Canadians with visual, hearing, medical or physical disabilities since 1983.

While the cost of placing and training a Dog Guide is approximately $20,000, each eligible candidate is provided a Dog Guide—including all required training, travel and accommodation—at no charge.

To date, more than 1,200 Canadians ranging in age from eight to 84 have received a Dog Guide.

These specially trained Dog Guide provide a tremendous gift, giving their handlers newfound independence, freedom and safety.

The Lions Foundation’s three programs: Canine Vision Canada, Hearing Ear Dogs of Canada, and Special Skills Dogs of Canada continue to expand and provide Dog Guides to a growing number of people in the western provinces.

Lions Foundation of Canada does not receive any government funding, so it must rely solely on fundraising activities, corporate sponsorships and private donations to support the Dog Guide training programs.

In addition to the two riders devoting their time to this ride, there are several key donors to ensure that expenses are covered so that all funds raised can go directly to Dog Guides.

Mainline Motors of Birtle, Man., has donated a van Paragon
Motors of Langenburg, Sask., has donated a truck,
Sun Ridge Forage of Russell, Man., has donated hay,
and oats and horse supplies have been provided by
Feed Rite.

The Binscarth Lions club is hosting a pancake
breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. and many Lions
clubs along the route are also organizing a variety of
fundraising activities.

Lions Foundation of Canada invites you to put
your best paw forward and join the effort to help
Canadians with physical disabilities by supporting
